Discover Dance

Through Discover Dance, our education outreach program, we offer live, fully-staged performances of classical ballets to elementary, middle and high school students throughout the Gulf Coast region. For each performance, we welcome guest artists from New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and other world-renowned companies to dance in the principal roles. Student audiences not only enjoy an excellent cultural event, they also are privileged to watch some of the world’s finest dancers perform right in their own community.

We believe that exposure to the arts is a vital part of every child’s education. With drastic cuts in education funding, the arts often are the first to be eliminated from the curriculum. Discover Dance helps bridge that gap, bringing classical ballet to those who otherwise might not be able to experience it.

We are grateful to The J.L. Bedsole Foundation,  Community Foundation of South Alabama, and other donors for their generous support of Discover Dance.

Discover Dance 2016-17 Season

When Clara opens her gift at the beautiful holiday party, Uncle Drosselmeyer begins to work his magic. Dolls dance for the guests, toy soldiers and mice engage in battle, and Clara is swept away by the Prince on a sleigh ride through the snow forest to the enchanting land of the Sugar Plum Fairy. We invite you to experience Clara’s wondrous dream. Or, was it really only a dream?

This annual holiday favorite always sells out quickly, so you are encouraged to
reserve your tickets early.

When Princess Aurora is an infant, the evil Fairy Carabosse gives her a spindle as a christening gift, then announces that one day Aurora will prick her finger with it and die. Happily, the Lilac Fairy has not yet given her gift. She promises that Aurora will not die but will fall into a deep sleep for one hundred years. At Aurora’s 20th birthday celebration, she pricks her finger and falls into a deep sleep. One hundred years later, she is awakened by Prince Florimund. They marry and are feted by a parade of fairytale characters.
